3 Important Tools for Today’s Job Market

If it’s been awhile since you’ve been in the job market, make sure you have what it takes for job-hunting in today’s economy. Three tools you’ll need to sharpen:

1. A strong resume. You can find lots of examples online, at monster.com, for example, or at your college career center—all will offer personal or online help to current students, and many are willing to help alumni, too. To get started, brainstorm every position experience you’ve ever had, then record the company name, position held, dates and places of employment. Use bullet points to detail your skills, projects, and achievements.

2. Interview skills. Practice with a friend or relative answering some of the most common questions posed by employers, such as “Tell me about yourself,” or “Why do you want this job?” and “What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?”

3. Make sure your online presence is all positive. Clean up your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to create the most polished, professional presentation possible. If you don’t have a LinkedIn account, create one (instructions and helpful hints are on the website) that shines a spotlight on your accomplishments and interests. Make sure you have a good profile picture (neutral background, friendly smile). Don’t forget to reach out to others who can provide recommendations—and do the same for others.
